A CD shop on street in Notting Hill

今日（10月18日）、ノッティング・ヒルの商店街を歩いていると、なかなかいい感じのソウルミュージックが聞こえてきた。近くに音楽CDやレコードを売る露店があったのだ。（以下がその写真）

レコードを少し眺めていると、店員さんが声をかけてきた。私はハウスミュージックを良く聞くという話をすると、おすすめのCDがあるといって、曲を流してくれた。シカゴハウスのミックスCDで確かになかなかいい感じである。

このCDの最初の3曲くらいを視聴させてもらって、いずれもいい感じなので、思わず購入してしまった。最近はCDをずっと買ってなかったので久々の音源購入。本CDはただのアッパーなハウスではなく、ソウルフルでジャジィな曲が多く、飽きずに聞いていられる。やはり、シカゴハウスはいい。

Today (18th of October), I walked through the local shopping street in Notting Hill. Then, quite nice soul music reached my ears. There is a street stall selling CDs and records. (Below is the photo.)

When I was just looking at some records, the shop staff spoke to me. I told him that I like house music and he recommended a CD to me. That was a Chicago house mix. He played the house mix and I liked it.

I listened to first 3 tracks of the CD and liked all of them, so I decided to buy the CD. Recently, I have not bought music CDs. This house mix is not just an upper house, but Soulful and Jazzy one. Thus I can have plenty to listen to the house music. Chicago House is fabulous!!

Ramen in London

ロンドンに来て早2週間が過ぎた。ついにロンドンの普段の食事に飽きてきて、日本食が恋しくなってきてしまった。ということで、今日は夕方から日本食を求めてSOHOに繰り出した。

SOHOは東京でいうところの新宿歌舞伎町のような場所。いろんなお店が軒を連ねている。そんな中で今日の夕食に選んだのはBone Daddiesというラーメン店。とんこつラーメンを注文したら、こんな感じ。

見た目はかなりいい感じ。食べてみるとまあまあといったところ。やはり、日本の名店に比べるとやや味は劣るが私の日本食を求める衝動は十分に治まった。スープのこくが薄いのとメンマが瓶詰めもののような味がしたところがマイナスポイントだった。

お値段はサービス料込みで￡12.38だったので、日本円にするとなんと1,945円！かなり贅沢なラーメンである。やはり、日本食は日本で食べるのが一番なんだなと再認識である。

About 2 weeks have already past since I came to London. At last, I get tired of food in London and I miss Japanese food. Thus, I went to SOHO in the evening today to get some Japanese food.

SOHO is like Shinjuku Kabuki-cho in Tokyo. There are various shops on the street. I chose Bone Daddies ,a ramen shop, among the huge variety of options. I ordered Tonkotsu ramen below picture.

It looks so good and taste OK. Although it is inferior to Japanese well-established ramen, it satisfied my impulse for Japanese food. It was negative that the soup tasted a little light and the mianma tasted like a bottled one.

The price was ￡12.38 including a service charge. That is 1,945 JPY, so pricey! After all, It is the best to have a Japanese food in Japan.

LSE Public Lecture - Eyes Wide Open

10月9日にLondon School of Economics and Political Science (LSE)の公開講座(18:30 - 20:00)に参加してきた。Noreena Hertzによる講演だったが、彼女が最近著した本「Eyes Wide Open: How to Make Smart Decisions in a Confusing World」の紹介という感じである。色々な局面でよりよい意思決定をする上で重要な洞察が語られた。

講演内容の趣旨は以下である。

• 我々は専門家を信頼しすぎてきた。
• 我々は専門性の定義をより広く捉えなおす必要がある。
• 経験は必ずしも専門性とはならない。
• 今日では誰もが様々な情報を集めることができる。
• 我々は違いを受け入れ、寛大になる必要がある。
• 我々は必ずしも経済理論にかなった理性的な意思決定者ではない。
• 昨日うまくいったことが、明日もうまくいくとは限らない。
• 我々は思考する時間とスペースを十分に確保する必要がある。

整理してみるとごく一般的な内容な気もするが、45分ほど具体例などを用いて説明された。残りの45分は全部質疑応答に当てられた。折角の機会と思い、私も勇気を出して質問してみた。その結果うまく聴衆の笑いをとることができ会心だった。

公開講座の終了後、近くに座っていたアラブ系フランス人に声をかけられ、名刺交換をするまでに至った。やはり、笑いが人を惹きつける力に改めて関心する次第である。

講演内容の趣旨に記載した最後の考えることが重要という洞察はなかなか感慨深い。なぜなら、京セラの稲盛和夫氏が以前講演で語っていたのだが、彼が若かりし頃に現パナソニックの松下幸之助氏が京都で行った講演で「どうしたら売上を上げられるか、どうしたら利益を上げられるか」というような質問に対し、「それは思わなあきませんな」と答えた一言に衝撃を受けたエピソードを思い出したため。その時、稲盛氏以外の聴衆は「思わなあかんいうても、具体的にどうすればいいかを教えてもらわな、我々は何をすればよいかがわからん。どうしたら売上を上げられるかの答えになっとらん。」と言い、松下氏は嘲笑に遭った。しかし、松下氏の一言に稲盛氏は「体中に電撃が走った」といっている。

日々のビジネスの現場で数多くの意思決定を強いられるビジネスパーソンにとって、どのようにすればより良い意思決定ができるかの答えが単に「思考する」ことでは、確かに禅問答のようでどこかもどかしいような気がする。しかし、その答えこそが真実なのだと私も思う。

それは意思決定をする人々はそれぞれ異なる外部環境／内部環境下にあり、その環境下で自分自身が地に足をつけた状態で考え抜いた答えこそが、その環境下において最適な意思決定となり得るのだと思う。

I attended a public lecture (18:30 - 20:00) at London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) on 9th of October. The speaker was Noreena Hertz, and she introduced her recently published book 'Eyes Wide Open: How to Make Smart Decisions in a Confusing World'. She talked about important insights in making smarter decisions in various situations.

The main point of the lecture was below.

• We've become too trusting on experts.
• We need to broaden our definition of expertise.
• Experience is not the relation of expertise.
• Today, we all can gather various information.
• We need to seek out difference and decency.
• We are not the rational decision makers of economic theories.
• What worked well yesterday may not work tomorrow.
• We need to carve out time and space to think.

Although those summary seems to be obvious, she explained them using specific examples for 45 minutes. The rest 45 minutes was spent by questions and answered. I thought it's good chance and I asked a question. As a result, I got a laugh of audience as I intended.

After the lecture, an Arab-French man spoke to me and we exchanged business cards each other. I realized the power of laugh attracting people.

The last insight of the lecture mentioned above is profoundly meaningful, because it reminded me of talking by Mr. Kazuo Inamori, a founder of Kyocera, about a story that Mr. Konosuke Matsushita, a founder of Panasonic, gave a lecture in Kyoto when Mr. Inamori was young. At the lecture of Mr. Matsushita, he was asked 'How to improve sales and profit?' by the audience and he answered just 'You need to think.' Although all audience was disappointed at the answer, jeerer at him, and said 'Just thinking is not enough. Without specific idea of how to do it, we can't understand how to do it. Your answer is empty.', Mr. Inamori felt electric shocks throughout his body.

It might be frustrating as if Zen riddle for business persons who need to make decisions from day to day that the answer for how to make smarter decision is just 'THINK'. But I think it is true.

Each decision maker is in different external and internal circumstances. Therefore, a decision which each decision maker made by thinking through enough and by staying down-to-earth will be the best suited one in the each circumstances.

9月29日からロンドンに来ている。今回の渡英目的の1つはプロセスワークのセミナー「Intensive Seminar: The World in Relationships」に参加することだ。

9月28日に東京で用事があったため、セミナー3日目の午後からの参加となった。
大まかな内容は以下である。

Day 3

• エクササイズのデモンストレーション（学生のスタディグループでの関係性）
• エクササイズ（3人組：ランクへの気づき）

Day 4

• グループプロセス（トピック：女性の組織）
• サブグループでのグループプロセス（組織に関する問題）

Day 5

• エクササイズのデモンストレーション（ルールを破る）
• エクササイズ（関係性の問題と慢性症状）
• グループプロセス（トピック：スコットランドとイングランド間の関係性、ナショナリズム）

Day 6

• インナーワーク（小さな暴君）
• グループプロセス（トピック：ジェンダー）

セミナーの雰囲気等は日本でのセミナーと同様で、親切な参加者が多く、女性参加者が多く、年齢層も高め（20代はほとんどいない）な感じである。

当然ながら英語でのセミナーなので、理解するのが大変だったがとても有意義なセミナーだった。深刻な問題を扱う場合でもユーモアを忘れずにファシリテートしていくArleneがやはりすごかった。

I have been in London since 29th of September. One of the objectives to come to London was to attend a Process Work seminar 'Intensive Seminar: The World in Relationships'.

I joined from the Day 3 afternoon of the seminar because I had something to do in Tokyo on 28th of September. The brief summary of the seminar was below.

Day 3

The atmosphere of the seminar was similar to Japanese one. Participants were always kind and gentle. Women held a majority of participants. There were many relatively older people. (Few people seemed to be 20s)

Although I was struggling to follow the English conversations, It was a meaningful seminar for me. Arlene's facilitation was excellent because she was never forgetting to incorporate humor in the process even when she dealt with serious problems.

PTE Academic test

上海キャンパスに行くことに決心した後、上海キャンパスの学部長（Dean）と電話インタビューすることになった。その学部長はフランス人で英語の発音がかなり聞き取りずらかったが、何とか電話インタビューは切り抜けた。しかし、後でやはり今回英国ビザTier4(General)を取得できなかった原因である英語力について懸念があり、テストスコアが一定の条件をクリアすれば上海キャンパスに入学させてもらえることになってしまった。

そこで今度はテスト結果が数日後にすぐ帰ってくるPTE（Pearson Test of English）と呼ばれるテストを受けることになった。早速受験の予約をしたものの、テスト準備のための教材がほとんどない。唯一の公式ガイドブックもAmazonで届くまで数日かかる状態で、ほとんど有効なテスト準備ができなかった。

9月10日にPTE Academicのテストを受け、なんと翌日にはテスト結果がオンラインで確認できる状態になった。ほとんどテスト準備できなかったため、やはり、テストスコアは散々なものだった。

よって、上海キャンパスでも入学できず、期日が過ぎてしまった。そして、ついに今年のMBA入学は見送らざるを得なくなってしまったのである。やはり、もっと余裕をもった入念な準備が必要だったということだろう。

留学資金のことも考慮し、一旦は再就職してお金を稼ぎ、2～3年後に改めてMBA留学を検討することにした。

After I decided to attend the Shanghai campus, an phone interview with Dean at Shanghai campus was set up. He is a French and has an accent, therefore it was difficult to understand what he said during the phone interview. After all, he concerned my English speaking ability which could not meet the required score for UK visa Tier 4 (General). And then, I was required to take another English test.

I chose to take an English test called PTE (Pearson Test of English) whose test results will be available in a few days at this time. Although I booked the test readily, there are few materials for preparation. The only official guidebook will take several days to ship if I order it through Amazon.com. So, I could not prepare for the test enough.

I took the PTE test on September 10th. Surprisingly, the test result was available on the next day. Not surprisingly, the test result was dismal because the preparation was insufficient.

Finally, the deadline was missed and I could not be accepted to Shanghai campus. Therefore, I had to give up to attend an MBA course this year. It would be needed to prepare more carefully for applying an MBA.

Considering my finance, I am planning to search a job again. And I will retry an MBA after a couple of years.

Test result of IELTS

8月3日に背水の陣で台湾まで受けに行ってきたIELTSのテスト結果が数日前に郵送されてきた。注目のスコアは、

・リスニング：　 6.0
・リーディング： 6.5
・ライティング： 6.5
・スピーキング： 5.0

　トータル： 6.0

なんと！！！スピーキングが英国ビザTier4(General)に必要な基準を満たしていない。。。前回はスピーキングで5.5取れていたのに。。どうしよう。。（あたふた、あたふた。）

一人で悩んでも仕方ないので、早速大学のリクルーターに連絡した。翌日にすぐに返答が来た。

ドバイまたは上海のキャンパスに変更する、および、授業開始より数週間遅れて到着する許可を取得するという代替策を提案頂いた。ドバイと上海は他のキャンパス（ロンドン、ボストン、サンフランシスコ）より、ビザの取得が容易らしい。
こういったフレキシブルなところはHultの良いところだと感じる。また、HultにはGlobal Campus Rotationという制度があり、最後の12週間は別のキャンパスで授業を受けることができる。よって、当初希望したロンドン・キャンパスにローテーションで行くことも可能である。

早速、遅れて到着する許可を申請したが、どちらのキャンパスにしようかが悩みどころである。

検討の結果、以下の3つの理由により、上海キャンパスに行くことにした。
・日本に帰国しやすい。
・物価が安く、生活費を抑えられる。
・前から興味があった中国語を勉強できる。

人生は何が起こるかわからない。柔軟で前向きにプランド・ハプンスタンスでいることが大事である。

I received the test result of IELTS I took with my back to the wall in Taiwan on August 3rd. The score was...

- Listening:  6.0
- Reading:   6.5
- Writing:    6.5
- Speaking: 5.0

  Overall Band Score: 6.0

Oh, my God!!!!! The speaking section doesn't meet the criteria for getting an UK visa Tier 4 (General)... Last time, I got 5.5 score in the speaking section... What should I do??? (in a helter-skelter.)

Since worrying this and that by myself would bring nothing, I informed my school recruiter of the test result. The next day, I received a response.

The recruiter suggested that I switched the campus to Dubai or Shanghai and applied for a late arrival permit for a few weeks. It seems that getting a visa for Dubai and Shanghai is easier than for other campuses such as London, Boston, and San Francisco.
I thought that such flexibility was good advantage of Hult. In addition, Hult offers students the Global Campus Rotation which provides a opportunity to go to study in other campuses in the last 12 weeks of One-Year MBA course. Therefore, it is possible to rotate to London campus afterward, where I admitted at first.

I immediately requested the late arrival permit, but I was just wondering which campus I should choose.

After careful consideration, I decided to go to Shanghai campus for the following 3 reasons.
- It's easy to fly back to Japan.
- Because of cheap prices in China, I can save living cost.
- I can study Mandarin I have been interested for some time.

No one knows what will happen in his/her life. It's important to be flexible and optimistic like the Planned Happenstance.

IELTS test in Taiwan

英国ビザTier4(General)の取得に必要な英語力の証明のため、IELTSを受験しに8月1日から8月3日まで台湾に行ってきた。

なぜ台湾かというと、日本でIELTSを受験するには試験日の5週間前から申込をしなければならないのだが、台湾では1週間前でも申込できる試験会場があったため。

9月5日には学校の入学式が始まるので、8月中にビザ取得が必要となり、あまり時間が残されていない。

そもそも、英国ビザTier4(General)はIELTSの場合リスニング・リーディング・ライティング・スピーキングの各科目で5.5点以上が必要なのだが、6月上旬に受験した結果は残念ながらリスニングだけ5.0点で基準を満たせなかった。そして、7月中旬にTOEFLを受験したが、こちらも残念ながら基準を満たせなかった。（やはり、TOEFLよりIELTSの方が簡単という定説は正しいようだ。。）
そこで急遽、8月上旬にIELTSを再度受験するはめとなったのである。

1日目は台湾の桃園空港に21:30頃に到着し、高速バスでそのままホテルに直行した。たまたまホテルのすぐ近くに夜市があったので、少し散策して就寝した。

2日目は12時頃にホテルをチェックアウトし、台北から試験会場のある高雄まで新幹線で移動。約1時間半で高雄に到着。地下鉄を乗り継いでホテルまで行き、チェックイン。日の出ているうちに事前に試験会場までの道順を下見しておいた。高雄は台湾第2の都市で栄えており、台湾の南部に位置するため、南国のように暑く天気が良い。

3日目はいよいよIELTS試験当日。8:30に会場入りし、受付を済ませた。やはり、台湾国外からの受験者は私だけのようで、受付の人は私にだけ英語で対応してくれた。スピーキングの試験官はイギリス人だった。13:30頃に試験終了し、すぐさま台北まで新幹線で移動し、台北駅からタクシーに乗り、15分くらいで松山空港に到着。当初、帰りのフライトに間に合うか心配だったが、無事チェックイン通過。搭乗時刻までの間、台北に住んでいる大学時代の友人と空港で待ち合わせていて、30分ほど喫茶店でお茶をした。タピオカミルクティーがとてもおいしく、束の間の観光気分を満喫。そして、飛行機に乗り込み、東京羽田空港に22:00頃到着。なんとかこのタイトスケジュールを乗り切った。

さて肝心の試験の方は、前回スコアが悪かったリスニングがやや心配だが、他のセクションはある程度の手ごたえがあった。ビザ取得に必要な全セクション5.5点以上の結果となることを祈るのみである。

I went to Taiwan from Aug. 1st to Aug. 3rd to take an IELTS test because I need to prove an adequate proficiency in English required for getting an UK visa Tier 4 (General).

The reason why I took the test in Taiwan, not in Japan, was that I could apply the IELTS test a week prior to the test day in Taiwan, although in Japan the application must be done 5 weeks prior to the test day.

The registration of MBA course will start on Sept. 5th. So, I need to get the UK visa by the end of Aug., but there is a narrow window of time left.

In the first place, to get an UK visa Tier 4 (General), it is required 5.5 or above score in each section of listening, reading, writing, and speaking in the case of IELTS. When I took an IELTS test at the beginning of June, unfortunately, the result didn't fulfill the criteria because only the listening section score was 5.0 and the scores of other sections were no less than 5.5. Then, I took a TOEFL test in the middle of July, but the score was also not good enough. (The commonly-accepted myth that IELTS is easier than TOEFL is probably true...)
For these reasons, I hastily had to retake an IELTS test in Taiwan at the beginning of Aug.

On the day 1, I arrived at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport at about 21:30 and went straight to a hotel by an express bus. As luck would have it, there is a night market just around the hotel. After I strolled around the night market for a little while, I went to bed.

On the day 2, I checked out of the hotel at about 12 o'clock and headed down from Taipei to Kaohsiung where the test venue was located. It took about one and a half hours by Taiwan High Speed Rail. From the Kaohsiung station, I used the subway to go to a hotel and checked in the hotel. I previewed the way to the test venue by walking before dark. Kaohsiung is the second largest city in Taiwan and located in the south part of Taiwan. Thus, it is very warm and the weather is fine in Kaohsiung like tropical islands.

On the day 3, which is the test day, I entered the venue at about 8:30 and went through the reception. I was probably the only person came from outside of Taiwan and the receptionist spoke to me in English. The examiner of the speaking test was a British man. The test ended at about 13:30 and I rushed into the train to Taipei. After arrival at Taipei, I took a taxi to Songshan Airport. I was anxious about my flight home at first, but I got checked into for the flight at last. Until I got on board the airplane, I spent about 30 minutes with a friend from college who lives in Taipei having tea at a cafe in the airport. The tapioca milk tea we had was so good. I enjoyed a moment of relaxation. Finally, I embarked for Tokyo Haneda Airport, arriving at about 22:00. That was a very tight scheduled trip.

To get back to talking about the IELTS test, although I felt a little bit anxious about the listening section, I felt I did well in other sections. I hope I will get 5.5 or above score in all sections which is required for a UK visa.
